AI Use

🤖 How Keep uses AI

Keep uses AI to do one job: turn the notes you write about the people in your life into clean summaries, reminders, and important dates. To do that, the text of your note is sent to third-party AI services for processing, and the structured result is sent back to your device.

The short version

  • You opt in first. Keep asks for your permission before it ever sends anything to an AI service.
  • Only note content is sent — the text of the note and the context of the person it's about. Your full contact list never leaves your device.
  • Nothing is stored by the AI services beyond the moment of processing, and your data is never used to train their models or sold to anyone.

What data is sent

When you record or type a note and it is processed, the following is sent to our AI services over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection:

  • The note itself: the voice recording (for transcription) and/or the text you wrote.
  • Context about the person the note is about: so the AI can be accurate and consistent, Keep includes details you've already saved for that one person — such as their name, relationship to you, notes, preferences, family members, and important dates.

Your entire address book is never sent. Only the note and the context for the single person it relates to are included. Everything else stays on your device.

Who the data is sent to

Keep uses two carefully selected third-party AI providers:

OpenAI (voice transcription)

  • Purpose: converting your voice recordings to text using OpenAI's Whisper service.
  • Voice recordings are deleted within seconds of transcription and are not used to train OpenAI's models.
  • Only the resulting text — not the audio — continues to the next step.

OpenRouter (AI analysis)

  • Purpose: processing the transcribed or typed text to extract summaries, events, reminders, and insights.
  • OpenRouter routes your request to the AI model you've selected — from providers such as Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), OpenAI, and others.
  • The AI returns structured data, which is saved locally on your device.
  • Your data is not stored by OpenRouter or the underlying model providers beyond processing, and is not used to train their models.

Your permission & control

  • Opt-in required: before you sign in, Keep clearly explains what is sent and to whom, and asks you to agree. Nothing is sent to any AI service until you do.
  • AI features are the reason to send data: if you don't agree, note text is not sent for AI processing.
  • Model choice: you control which AI model processes your notes in the app's settings.
  • Local-first: all of your saved data lives on your device. Keep's servers relay your note to the AI service and return the result — they don't store your notes or contacts.
